Complexity, absurdity and detail are all characteristics of Jaap Drupsteen’s work. Video productions form the majority of his oeuvre meaning every second holds a uniquely beautiful graphic image. Unlike the traditional graphic designer, Drupsteen creates twenty-five incredible image per second.

These fantastic compositions are rarely viewed as individual frames. This resulted in our idea for the accompanying Jaap Drupsteen - Designer | Explorer publication which selects and showcases stills from all Drupsteen’s video pieces on display in the exhibition.

The book presents over 400 stills full of colour, patterns and effects, many of which were created before the use of computers. Yet his work manages to stay current and in fact has influenced many more modern visual styles.

Secondly, the cover takes the book to another level outside of its usual function. Drupsteen became revolutionary in his early use of chroma-keying, also known as the green/blue screen effect. This technique allowed him to re-place his actors or elements into different environments and layers.

Consequently, we created an app (available on Apple App store) which allows the user to try this effect with their own copy of the book. The app contains a library of stills and video clips taken from Drupsteen’s productions, the user can then select one and magically see this replace the completely blue book. The app brings the printed video productions to life while explaining Drupsteen’s process.
